"We arranged this apartment from abroad. Neither I nor the landlord was in the Netherlands, and I would not arrive until the day after the keys were handed over. From first enquiry to moving in took about six weeks, and The Hague Real Estate Services carried most of that weight. Daniël Stempa handled the viewing and the negotiation. Coming from a diplomatic posting, I could not produce several of the documents a Dutch agency would normally expect, and I could not attend a viewing in person. He worked around both, and relayed each round of the landlord's position clearly and within a day or two, so we always knew where we stood. Manon kept the offer moving on the administrative side, and Onno Binnerts prepared the contract with real responsiveness — twice I flagged something that needed correcting, and on both occasions the revised documents came back the same day or the next morning, with a straightforward apology rather than an argument. When my bank abroad struggled with the international transfer, he supplied every field they asked for without a hint of impatience. If I single anyone out, though, it would be Annalu Smith. The handover was the part of this move I was most worried about. I would still be in the air on the day the keys changed hands, and the timing did not line up with the office's availability either. Annalu brought the appointment forward, accepted a colleague attending on my behalf, and made sure everything was ready — so my family walked into a finished apartment on their first day rather than living out of suitcases. For a family arriving in a new country, that is not a small thing. Her documentation was excellent: over a hundred photographs of the apartment on handover day, and a clear written list of what still needed doing, sent through unprompted with a technician already scheduled. Even before I arrived, questions I sent ahead were answered promptly, and she offered to check things at the property herself during the inspection. What I have appreciated most since moving in is her straightforwardness. When I raised a list of things about the apartment, she was honest about what could be fixed and what could not, rather than glossing over it — and where something fell outside their remit, she still took the trouble to point us to a shop nearby where it could be sorted. One less thing for us to chase. Nothing went perfectly — a couple of things needed correcting along the way, as they usually do. What mattered is that every single one was put right quickly and without fuss. Relocating a family across borders is stressful enough. Annalu in particular made this move a much easier one than it might have been, and I wanted to say so."
